Live Resin, Wax and Oil: What the Terms Mean on a Hemp Label
On a hemp label, "live resin," "wax" and "oil" describe how an extract was made and what it looks like. They do not describe how it will make you feel, and none of them is a health claim. This guide explains the terms so you can read a label and a lab report with confidence. It is for adults 21 and older.
Live resin
Live resin is made from hemp plant material that is frozen soon after harvest instead of being dried and cured first. The extract is then made from the frozen material. Makers use this method because drying and curing can change the plant's natural aroma compounds (terpenes), and freezing is meant to keep more of them. The result is usually a soft, sticky, aromatic extract.
Wax
"Wax" usually means an extract made from dried and cured plant material and then whipped or purged into an opaque, soft texture. The name describes the texture, not a different plant or a different strength. Terpene content is often lower or different from live resin because of the drying step, but this varies by maker.
Oil and distillate
"Oil" is the broadest term. It can mean a crude extract, a refined distillate, or an extract mixed into a carrier oil such as MCT oil. Distillates are refined to concentrate specific cannabinoids and often lose most natural aroma in the process. Some products add terpenes back in, so check whether the label says they are plant-derived or added.
What the label cannot tell you
- Strength: a live resin is not automatically stronger or weaker than a wax. Compare the cannabinoid percentages on the lab report for that batch.
- Effects: terms like "full spectrum" or "whole plant" describe what is in the extract, not what it will do. Effects differ from person to person.
- Safety and quality: only a third-party lab report (certificate of analysis) shows potency and whether the batch was tested for contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides and residual solvents.
How to check a product
- Find the batch or lot number on the package.
- Open the matching certificate of analysis from an independent lab. Our guide on how to read a certificate of analysis walks through it.
- Check the cannabinoid totals and the contaminant results, not just the marketing name.
- Confirm the product is hemp-derived and that it is legal where you live. See hemp-derived CBD legality: New York and US basics.
Frequently asked questions
Is live resin stronger than wax?
Not by definition. Strength depends on the specific product and batch, so read the lab report instead of relying on the name.
Why do some extracts need cool storage?
Terpenes and some extract textures are sensitive to heat, light and air. Follow the storage instructions on the package.
Does LIV Extracts sell live resin or wax?
No. LIV Extracts currently offers CBD gummies, CBD capsules and infused pre-rolls. This guide is general education about label terms.
Are these products for everyone?
No. They are for adults 21 and older. Ask a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, take medication or have a medical condition. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA, and these products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
