CBD 101

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring compound from the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa. It's one of more than 100 compounds in hemp known as cannabinoids. Unlike delta-9 THC, the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, CBD is generally considered non-intoxicating: it doesn't produce a "high."

Three types of CBD extract

How the hemp is processed decides what ends up in the extract. All three LIV products are full spectrum.

Type What's in it THC
Full spectrumLIV CBD plus other hemp compounds: minor cannabinoids like CBG, CBN and CBC, terpenes and flavonoids May contain small amounts. Total THC was not detected in LIV's lab reports
Broad spectrum CBD plus other hemp compounds, with the THC removed Removed to non-detectable levels
Isolate Pure CBD (99%+), with everything else removed. Tasteless and odorless None

Some researchers think hemp compounds may work together, an idea called the "entourage effect." The evidence is still limited.

Other cannabinoids

Cannabigerol

CBG

Often called the "mother cannabinoid": the plant makes other cannabinoids from its acidic form, CBGA. Small amounts of CBG show up in the lab reports for Relax and Sleep.

Cannabinol

CBN

Forms as THC ages and is exposed to oxygen, heat or light. It's generally described as only mildly intoxicating, if at all, at typical product levels. Each Sleep capsule has 3.5 mg.

How to choose a quality CBD product

  1. Check the lab report

Look for a third-party certificate of analysis (COA) for your batch, ideally through a QR code on the label. Every LIV bottle has one.

  2. Read the label

It should show the CBD per serving and per package, a batch number and the full ingredient list.

  3. Know the source

Ask where the hemp is grown and how it's extracted. A good brand can tell you.

  4. Start low, go slow

Follow the label and give yourself time to notice how you respond. Ask a healthcare professional first if you take medication, have a medical condition, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Where the body's cannabinoid receptors are: CB1 receptors are concentrated in the brain and nervous system, CB2 receptors mostly on immune cells and in other tissues.

The endocannabinoid system

Your body's own cannabinoid system.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a signaling network that runs throughout the body. Scientists identified it in the late 1980s and early 1990s while studying how cannabis compounds act on the body. It appears to help keep many of the body's processes in balance, and research into exactly how is still going on.

  1. Endocannabinoids

The messengers: molecules your body makes when it needs them. The best known are anandamide and 2-AG.

  2. Receptors

The receivers. Endocannabinoids bind to receptors on cells. CB1 receptors are concentrated in the brain and nervous system; CB2 receptors sit mostly on immune cells and in tissues elsewhere in the body.

  3. Enzymes

The clean-up crew. Once the messengers have done their job, enzymes break them down: FAAH breaks down anandamide, and MAGL breaks down 2-AG.

Where CBD fits

CBD is a cannabinoid from the hemp plant. Unlike THC, it doesn't bind strongly to CB1 or CB2 receptors. One idea researchers are studying is that it may slow the breakdown of the body's own endocannabinoids. Much of that work is still early.

Learn

How your body handles CBD.

CBD enters the bloodstream, is distributed and metabolized, and may influence ECS signaling indirectly rather than strongly binding to CB1 or CB2 receptors. Onset, duration and bioavailability differ by format and by person.

  1. Take

CBD enters through digestion, tissues under the tongue, or skin, depending on the format.

  2. Absorb

A portion reaches circulation. Food, formulation and individual biology can affect the amount.

  3. Process

The liver and other tissues metabolize CBD into compounds the body can eliminate.

  4. Interact

CBD may affect enzymes, receptors and signaling pathways connected to the ECS and beyond.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Something else? Email us and a person will reply.

Is CBD the same as THC?

No. CBD is generally considered non-intoxicating, while THC is the cannabinoid most associated with a high. Total THC was not detected in the current lab reports for all three LIV products.

What does full spectrum mean?

Full-spectrum products keep a range of compounds from the hemp plant rather than CBD on its own. Federal law limits how much THC hemp products can contain, and total THC was not detected in the current lab reports for all three LIV products.

How do I see the lab report for my bottle?

Scan the QR code on the label, or pick your product under Lab results. Each report shows the batch number, the lab and every cannabinoid it measured.

Can I take CBD with medication?

Ask a healthcare professional before use if you take medication, have a medical condition, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Who can buy from LIV Extracts?

Our products are for adults 21 and older.
